I used to think J. Alfred was a sorry case:
\nthe poor mortal man in search of something meaningful.
\nI used to think the meaningful important,
\nbut now coffee spoons seem almost appropriate.<\/p>\n
Yes, I remember rooms where people came and went,
\nand looked on in malice, trying to impress
\nin their masked agony of discontent.<\/p>\n
Were they like me, or were they I?
\nBetter still, (or worse yet)
\nwas I like them?<\/p>\n
My own agony of discontent was my own.
\nBut my agony was different, I know it was.
\nI had only to look at their faces to feel their
\nmalice (and for their sake, look impressed),
\nto know their discontent was not as mine.<\/p>\n
Those rooms seem so long ago and yet,
\nI’m in one now.
\nThe windows show a world that I look out into,
\nbut am not a part of, or at least
\ndon’t seem to be. <\/p>\n
I don’t seem to be free.<\/p>\n
There is my agony, my discontent.
\nThough I may sit in this room and lament,
\nit’d not be for any gain
\nor satisfaction.
\nIt’s just a humble method of distraction,
\nto take away my mind from simple agonies,
\nthough for some time I’ve known
\n(I’ve not fooled myself),
\nit is an agony all its own.<\/p>\n
Simple agonies, a simple malice.
\nWho am I trying to impress?
\nThere’s no one else inside my room but me,
\nand I’m not free.
\nThough I may come and go, as people do,
\nfor now I’ll stay.<\/p>\n
But out the window I see such a nice day.<\/p>\n
I’d probably get a sunburn, or catch a cold,
