Consciousness
\nIs the One Force
\nBy the presence
\nOf which all
\nMay be;
\nBy which we are:
\nConscious
\nAs what we are
\n(I am a man);
\nConscious
\nOf something
\n(I am);
\nConscious,
\nIn degrees
\nOf being conscious
\n(I know I am,
\nI know I am a man:
\nI am conscious
\nOf being conscious
\nAs a man).<\/p>\n
Only one Consciousness is;
\nAnd is all.
\nFrom One Consciousness
\nMan did fall.
\nNow by desultory self-esteem
\nMan believes Consciousness
\nIs his, and his alone.
\nBut Consciousness is.
\nMan is vaguely aware that
\nSomething is there, which
\nMakes him think, desire to know,
\nTo live, and grow;
\nBut that something he knows not.
\nVaguely knowing it’s there,
\nToo many men have no inkling
\nOf care to know this One
\nConsciousness.<\/p>\n
It is not a cause;
\nNor an effect.
\nIt has no function,
\nYet no function
\nCan be without it.
\nIt cannot be used;
\nCannot use.
\nNo attributes,
\nNo qualities;
\nNo measurements
\nOr properties:
\nConsciousness cannot
\nBe divided into
\nDegrees; diminished
\nOr expanded;
\nHeld or released;
\nIt cannot
\nBe possessed;
\nOr possess;
\nIt never began, and
\nNever shall cease.
\nThe ultimate reality:
\nConsciousness IS.<\/p>\n
By it may rock
\nBe conscious as
\nIts function – rock.
\nI am conscious as a man.
\nBut I long to be conscious of
