{"id":312,"date":"1987-03-21T14:03:19","date_gmt":"1987-03-21T22:03:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sm.amigotico.com\/poetryblog\/?p=312"},"modified":"2011-05-22T00:07:37","modified_gmt":"2011-05-22T07:07:37","slug":"the-hierophant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/smpoetry.amigotico.com\/index.php\/1987\/03\/21\/the-hierophant\/","title":{"rendered":"The Hierophant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Poets are the hierophants of an unapprehended inspiration&#8221; &#8211; Shelley. <\/p>\n<p>Staring at the rain, he sits.<br \/>\nWatching, waiting, surmising<br \/>\nThe pains and tribulations of life<br \/>\n(Of lives not his own)<br \/>\nThis man in thought, not alone. <\/p>\n<p>Glaring at the sky;<br \/>\nMind racing onward and thoughts<br \/>\nChasing each other out of the obscurity<br \/>\nOf such an animate mind. <\/p>\n<p>He looks at the sky<br \/>\nAnd at the rain;<br \/>\nHe sees through the sky<br \/>\nAnd weather;<br \/>\nThrough the mind<br \/>\nThat makes him the<br \/>\nThe hierophant. <\/p>\n<p>Through the rain and the<br \/>\nSkies he becomes clearer.<br \/>\nI see his face;<br \/>\nI feel his face.<br \/>\nI see through the face<br \/>\nThat sees through mine. <\/p>\n<p>In the expanse of his eyes<br \/>\nI drift through time:<br \/>\nThe sleeping woman<br \/>\nAnd the dying baby,<br \/>\nUnaware of any death;<br \/>\nThe crying infant<br \/>\nAnd the three century tree,<br \/>\nUnaware of any Life.<br \/>\nIn the expanse of his eyes<br \/>\nI reflect and conjure<br \/>\nThe passive activism &#8211;<br \/>\nThe passive worship.<br \/>\nHis mind sees not the object<br \/>\nBut the mind seeing the image. <\/p>\n<p>Again, the image of<br \/>\nA face appears:<br \/>\nThe face that once was<br \/>\nYoung, and at once is old.<br \/>\nBut youth shines through this age;<br \/>\nGiving hints of men<br \/>\nWho&#8217;ve fought, and men<br \/>\nWho&#8217;ve worshipped, and<br \/>\nMen who&#8217;ve taught,<br \/>\nAnd women tending babies. <\/p>\n<p>Active mind; a process<br \/>\nTakes the place<br \/>\nOf each thought<br \/>\nRacing, chasing, losing,<br \/>\nTeaching: traversing<br \/>\nThe realms of his mind. <\/p>\n<p>No small diversion,<br \/>\nAs images of<br \/>\nRain or sky<br \/>\nCan slow his mind. <\/p>\n<p>His mind is free.<br \/>\nHis thoughts are free.<br \/>\nFreed from constricting objects<br \/>\nLay people see day after day.<br \/>\nHis mind is free to see<br \/>\nFar beyond images<br \/>\nOf any objects,<br \/>\nAnd his mind sees far<br \/>\nMore than any object. <\/p>\n<p>Far more unseen, unfelt,<br \/>\nBut known. <\/p>\n<p>How to see knowledge<br \/>\nAs Knowledge?<br \/>\nFor the tangible<br \/>\nKnows no bounds,<br \/>\nBut is not boundless.<br \/>\nWhat the hand may touch,<br \/>\nThe mind should not.<br \/>\nWhat the mind may touch,<br \/>\nThe hand never will.<br \/>\nSo may he surmise. <\/p>\n<p>How can a hand touch Life<br \/>\nWhen a hand has no Life?<br \/>\nMerely animated by Life,<br \/>\nA hand cannot survive alone. <\/p>\n<p>How can the hand<br \/>\nTouch the flower<br \/>\nAnd feel the Life of<br \/>\nThe flower?<br \/>\nHow cannot the mind,<br \/>\nKnowing the Life in the<br \/>\nHand, and knowing Life<br \/>\nIn the flower,<br \/>\nFeel the Life they share?
