My Right to be Me

I’m constantly confounded
And unanimously
(since it’s only me)
astounded
by the idiocracy
the hipocracy
of what a government
wants to be.

It has for me
Been stipulated
That the righteous
have deflated
Any value in my
Right
To be me.

And what could be
[…]

Sunset

Stealth chill of night
sneaks over to fondle me;
a burning sun still visible,
though balancing
on the rim of
a distant
Pacific.

Clouds swirl in a gentle anger;
lighted from beneath
with a blazing
orange-yellow wreath
of sun’s dying rays.

Hints of night’s impending
coup d’etat
[…]

Reporters

Joyful shouts shatter
and drown an ever-deepening message.

Pages stir sleepily
as words drift onto paper,
images onto film,
voices onto airwaves.

We write:

purveyors of all that is,
sentinels of all
that trust would draw away;
unembarrassed
to bear witness
to the sickness
of our times.

Sometimes I […]

Ravage the Planet

As we ravage the planet, there’s nowhere to turn.
As the world around us crumbles, what have we learned?
Not as much as one would hope, it’s obvious to me.
And the lessons we are learning are not being taken seriously.

The polar ice melts and the guilt comes our way,
for we’ve not done […]

Diminishing Resource

Boulders rounded by the ravages of time;
Sinewy sluices weave down the valley floor.

I taste the cold crystal waters
and cherish all I have.
The diminishing of special places
is what scares me most right now.

And the river brings me life,
brings the sense of urgency
as it rises with the melting […]

The Haughty Solitude

Gouge the eyes
with visions
I have loved,
and the burning despair
that perchance
I would have anticipated,
had the future’s
narrow path not been
so destructive.

It replaces what I said,
a triumphant fantasy,
a knave to the great
drifting ego
that distresses me

I cannot […]

Future Denied

Among the wise I was young;
among the wisdom of sages speaking
their defeated dreams, standing to ruin
the day and the purpose of this stealth.

Wind never said what politics could have moaned;
embraced within a song, this craft of men
whose knowledge of time was impatient,
succumbing to the time thus known.

[…]

Inward

Empty dreams leave the winding years behind us.
Each sun, each moon, comes and goes;
a god-bearing luminescence over all
the empty paths I’ve trodden.

Blossoms on the vine that strangles;
beauty masking surreptitious tragedy,
as masked remains this
distracted life.

I sway to the sound of stars and beats
distracted from the […]

All That Keeps Me

How quickly yesterday’s great future
became the longing incompleteness of today.
We drive onward through the regret
Of yesterday’s lost hopes,
life’s abrupt changes
scattered about in
newspaper stories of the day.

The illusion takes the eye to darkness;
I amuse my heart with countless reminiscences.
This sorrow bittered by
the […]

Disturbing Night

There was midnight and it brimmed over in dark solitude
as the river flowed to laugh with me.
Its babbling, raging, thundering heart
suffocates and sustains the rebel in me.

A pale though wanton night, dark as it had seemed,
eyelids torn from their roots to stare at this midnight peace–
a perfect union of […]
